Beastmen Special Choices Tactics

Minotaurs

I've had mixed results with these guys. The key is to pick the correct opposing units for them. One thing that has been proven time and time again is that a unit of 8 Minos cannot beat a Treeman. I would assume that the same is true for most other high Toughness monsters you will encounter. I don't recommend trying it.

I typically field these guys in units of 6 or so, with a muso and standard. That's at 2,400 points. They are super expensive, and rarely seem to get their points back. There are really just two main reasons I still use them: the first is that the regiment looks really kewl, and the second is that I don't have time to paint another unit of Bestigor. They do charge in with a ton of attacks, and that only gets better as they win rounds of combat. Their low Leadership means that if they don't win combat, they're probably going to run away. If you like the Minotaurs for flavor like I do, throw them in. If you're trying to be as competitive as possible, go with Bestigor.

Centigors

I think 8th really hurt these guys, by making cav much less effective against ranked troops. These fellas won't even break ranks unless you take a ton of them. They're too expensive to consider them a completely throw-away unit, but they just aren't as effective as I'd like them to be. I don't have much else to say about Centigors at the moment.

Harpies

I have had decent experiences with these in units of 5 with no upgrades; mainly as distraction units. They help to control what hits my big blocks, and when. They also have the option of running out and attempting to destroy war machines, or solo wizard characters. I never expect them to survive a game, nor do I expect them to rally once they start running away. I recommend the Harpies, as a cheap and extremely useful unit.

Bestigors

The Bestigors are great. 8th Edition really turned them up a notch. Getting supporting attacks, and having easy access to augment magic makes these guys insanely good. I take a unit of 24 every game. I usually give them the Banner of Discipline for the Leadership boost. I can't say enough about these guys, and I will likely be building a second regiment off them in the future.

Razorgor Chariots

I haven't tried these yet. I don't know whether a more expensive, but harder hitting chariot would be worthwhile or not.

Razorgors

The real problem with these guys is Leadership. That said, Razorgors are cheaper than the Minos once they're kitted out, they have more attacks, more move, and better Toughness. Being on 50mm bases, you may get less models into base contact. I typically field one or two, in solo unit(s). They are very survivable, and can typically take a small regiment (say 10 Wood Elf archers with a wizard) on their own if you get the charge off. I recommend them for cheap distraction units, that can be used similar to the Harpies.
